Maths

As mathematicians we calculate, investigate and solve problems in everyday life.

At Ellwood School we aim to develop lively, enquiring minds encouraging pupils to become self-motivated, confident and capable in order to solve problems that will become an integral part of their future.

Children will be taught skills using a range of strategies and methods to enable them to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics.

They will be given the opportunity to solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions. These problems will be set in a range of contexts and linked to learning in other areas of the curriculum, where possible.

They will also learn to reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language

Math Working Walls

All classes have math working walls. These include key information linked to the current math unit. All working walls have vocabulary, misconceptions, problem solving and reasoning. Children can then access these walls during lessons to support their learning.
Number Stacks

As a school we have invested in a manipulative-based whole-school intervention scheme that covers key mathematical skills from EYFS to Year 6.
Times Tables
Learning multiplication tables and the related division facts is an important part of the Maths Curriculum and we have a range of challenges to help encourage the children to learn and recall these facts quickly and accurately. It is particularly important for the children to ensure that they have learnt all of their times tables by the end of year 4, when they will sit a national test.

Autumn Term 2023

Year 4 have been using their ‘maths toolkits’ to support their learning of place value.
Spring Term 2023
Year 4 have been enjoying some practical maths. We have used counters to see the movement of digits when we multiply by 10 or 100 and divide by 10 or 100. We have also looked at area using many post-it notes. How many do we need to fill a table? A whiteboard? How many different shapes or pictures can we make with the same area?
Autumn Term 2022
Year 1 pupils used a range of manipulatives to explore counting tens and ones.
Spring Term 2022
Year 1 have been busy learning how to count in 2s, 5s and 10s and being able to write repeated addition calculations. The children have been making arrays and have started learning simple division and fractions. We have being sharing objects and discussing numbers that can be shared and numbers that can't.
Maths Week 2022

This week the children took part in a range of activities. Years 3 to 6 took part in a Times Tables Rockstars competition - congratulations to all those who took part and especially the highest scorers.

Oak class had fun doing lots of practical maths activities. They went into the garden to explore the composition of numbers to three and also played games linked to subitising.

Autumn Term 2023

Year 3 have been exploring how we can partition numbers flexibly using different manipulatives during our place value unit.
Autumn Term 2023

Year 2 pupils have been learning about place value. They have explored the value of each digit in a 2-digit number, made and partitioned 2-digit numbers and order and sequenced them.
Summer Term 2023

Year 2 pupils enjoyed a practical approach to learning about different measurements.
Autumn Term 2022
Year 2 enjoyed a practical approach to learning about 2D and 3D shapes. They created 2D shapes using geoboards, used mirrors to find lines of symmetry and identified the 2D shapes that are the faces of 3D shapes. They used this knowledge to make nets of some common 3D shapes.
No Pens Day 2023
On No Pens day the children had the opportunity to learn maths and practise number skills without writing. Maths games are always popular with the children. Year 2 explored different ways to partition 100, using base 10 equipment.
