Picture News
At Ellwood School we use Picture News to help develop our cultural knowledge.
It enhances children’s global awareness
Learning about current affairs unlocks an abundance of information from all over the world. Picture News exposes children to more global stories and events.
Teaching with the news helps pupils’ cultural capital. We want children to develop thier knowledge regardless of their personal circumstances, all children can grow their global understanding by exploring, analysing, and debating news topics. News-based learning can take children beyond the walls of their classroom, to introduce new and exciting stories.
Personal development
There is a strong relationship between global awareness and self-awareness.
Learning about the world allows children to explore their own opinions, interests, and passions! Knowing what’s happening can help them expand their understanding of the world around them.
Exploring and debating news stories can ultimately shape your pupils as well-adapted, productive citizens, who genuinely care about the wider world.
Engaging in debates and discussions related to current affairs also contributes to the development of our pupils’ social skills, such as respect for others’ opinions and communication skills.
South and North America
Sycamore and Willow learn about life in the two Americas with a particular focus on human and physical geography. They also learn about food and music from these continents and study the work of American artists.
The school has previously had a link with a school in India which was very successful. It was a chance for both schools to learn about the similarities and differences between our cultures. Teachers from Ellwood had the opportunity to visit India and we then hosted teachers from India in return.
