Oak Class 2025-2026

Published: 22 Sep '25

Hello and welcome to Oak class.

My name is Mrs King and I am the EYFS Lead and Class teacher. On this page you will find some of the exciting learning opportunities we have been taking part in.

If you do have any questions regarding Reception class here at Ellwood Community Primary School, please feel free to email me on oak@ellwood.gloucs.sch.uk

We read the story of Pumpkin Soup which is funny because we have been talking about the seasons and Harvest and we are in the season of Autumn which is when we pick pumpkins. We thought it would be great to make our own pumkin soup. We scooped out the insides of the pumkin which made our fingers ache a bit but Mrs King said this was good of our little finger muscles. We then chopped up the pumkin with the help of Mrs King and Mrs Chiswell. Once the cooking part was done we tried the soup and thought of some great words to describe it; warm, smooth, spicy, curry. We also went into the Forest adventure area and use hammers and nails to tap into all the different pumpkins and squashes. We also noticed how many more leaves were on the ground and the different colours that make up Autumn.

To begin our PE experience in Oak Class we take part in Jungle Journey where, once a week, we go to the jungle. We prepare for the long journey through exploring moving safely in the hall using different speeds to manouvre. We then become the animals in the jungle, we stand tall when we are giraffes, using our tippee toes, we use our high knees when we are elephants and we practise standing on one, balancing carefully when we are flamingoes. Then we turn into hippos and crocodiles and use each others bodies to crawl through when we are a crocodile and bend and so that we are on our toes and hands to be hippos for the crocodile to crawl through. Then we work together in pairs to be monkeys that play with coconuts (balls) we practise our hand/ eye coordination by rolling the ball to our monkey partner firstly sat down and then to make it hard we lie on our tummys. Then to make it even harder we get further away. It`s tricky but we are developing some great core strength, our big muscles, our little muscles and we work well with our partners. But most of all we are having fun!

The year 6 children are a great support to the children in Oak Class. Each Reception child has a year 6 buddy. Every week the children meet in Oak class and spend time together either reading stories to one another, playing games and crafting. All children involved love buddy time and the year 6 children are very attached to the children in Oak class. We are very luck to have such caring children at Ellwood

The children have had a fantastic first week in school and we are thoroughly enjoying getting to know them.

After reading `The Smeds and the Smoos` we wondered what other colours we could make by adding 2 colours together. It was a great experiment. We used primary colours red, yellow and blue to see what secondary colour we could make. It was messy!

Oak Class are fortunate enough to have the experience of forest adventures once a week for the whole academic year. They enjoy a range of experiences out in the open where they are in the school forest area or off site in the wonderful forest that we have on our doorstep. The children are encouraged to emmerse themselves in the environment which enables them, with the support of the adults to build upon their understanding of the natural world and the changes that occur throughout the year. They expereince that awe and wonder through cause and effect, they develop problem solving, respect for the environment, social and emotional resileince through working together to achieve a desired outcome as well as developing those big gross motor skills and smaller fine motor skills. Oak class always have a fantastic time come rain or shine.  WE LOVE FOREST ADVENTURES!

In Oak class we like to think of fun ways to help the little muscles in our hands grow - we call this `Funky Finger`. We practise threading, pinching with tweezers, scooping, disco dough, playdough, squeezing, cutting and lots more. Mrs King says it helps our hands to get strong. But we think she just likes making up funny things for us to do. It can get messy but thats ok!

During our first few weeks at Ellwood school we have been busy exploring, which means we have had the oportunity to develop our big muscles which are helping us to develop our strength, balance, coordination and stamina. We have been climbing, balancing, bike riding, jumping, building obstacle courses, digging and so much more. We are always so busy playing..
