Working in partnership with our community is important. It helps our children to develop British Values (respect, democracy, law, liberty), particularly their citizenship.
- Strengthens Democracy: Active citizens engage with political and legal systems, helping to protect democratic values like equality and justice.
- Promotes Social Cohesion: It fosters respect for diversity and multiculturalism, helping people from different backgrounds feel included and accepted.
- Encourages Community Improvement: Citizens contribute to their local area through volunteering, raising awareness for social issues, and maintaining safety by following laws.
- Builds Social Capital: Participation in collective activities increases trust and creates stronger relationships between community members.
- Develops Critical Skills: Pupils learn to think critically, debate political and social issues, and weigh evidence to make reasoned arguments.
- Empowers Agency: Citizenship education gives children a "voice" and the confidence to believe they can influence change in their school and wider society.
- Prepares for Adulthood: It equips children with practical life skills, such as financial literacy, media literacy (recognising misinformation), and an understanding of the justice system.
- Improves Engagement: Research shows that pupils who receive frequent citizenship education are more likely to vote and participate in democratic life as adults.
- Nurtures Empathy: By exploring global citizenship, children develop compassion and an understanding of how their actions affect others locally and globally. At Ellwood Community School we take part in lots of community events to develop citizenship such as; litter picking, attending social events, visiting local places of interest and supporting local businesses, planting flowers and trees, taking part in local competitions e.g. the local literacy festival, oracy and history competitions, singing in residential homes, local gardening competitions and fundraising events.
